 Phonology, Phonics, and English Spelling
Morphophonemic rules (different ways of pronouncing suffixes such as past tense <-ed>, for example) are also important: a particular morpheme may have fewer spellings than it has pronunciations (for example, the <-s> suffix for plural nouns is sometimes pronounced /s/ and sometimes /z/; the <-ed> suffix is pronounced three ways: /d/, /t/, and /(schwa)d/.
English spelling is our traditional way of representing the English language in written form; there is no necessary connection between the spelling system and the language system.
The 26 letters of the English alphabet are the raw material used to create graphemes, which in turn are used to represent the phonemes of the language.

Suffix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In grammar, a suffix — a form of affix — follows the morpheme to which it attaches.
In the English language, suffixes appear as additions at the end of a word (or at the end of part of a word).
For an example from colloquial (British) English take the word "soonish", where the suffix "ish" modifies the root-word "soon", changing its meaning to "soon, but not all that soon".

 The 12dicts Word Lists
The other list, the 2of12 list, is more inclusive in that it includes words listed in as few as two of the source dictionaries, but less inclusive in that it excludes items of various sorts, including multiword phrases, proper names and abbreviations.
Unlike the 6of12 and 2of12 lists, this list is not based exclusively on the contents of my 12 source dictionaries, and for this reason it has, I feel, less authority than the other classic 12dicts lists.
Because these two lists have the same rules for the kinds of words included, one could easily combine the two to produce a slightly larger list including a number of words whose omission from 6of12 is rather surprising.

In a matter of weeks, students will not only be comfortable identifying complex words in their own reading and writing, but also of breaking those words (and others with which they are not familiar) down and attempting to understand their meaning by the meanings of their parts.

Note: The fourth column "Function or Characteristic Usage" indicates the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) of words with this suffix.
An example would be the suffix ish, which may change a noun to an adjective.
