English is also an important minority language of South Africa (South African English), and in several other former colonies and current dependent territories of the United Kingdom and the United States, for example Guam and Mauritius.
English is the most widely learned and used foreign language in the world, and as such, some linguists believe that it is no longer the exclusive cultural emblem of 'native English speakers', but rather a language that is absorbing aspects of cultures world-wide as it grows in use.
English has been implicated in a number of historical and ongoing so-called 'language deaths' and 'linguicides' around the world, many of which have also led to the loss of cultural heritage.

 Diacritic information - Search.com
A diacritical mark or diacritic, sometimes called an accent mark, is a mark added to a letter to alter a word's pronunciation or to distinguish between similar words.
The main usage of a diacritic is to change the phonetic meaning of the letter, but the term is also used in a more general sense of changing the meaning of the letter or even the whole word.
Diacritics can be used for emphasis (érg koud for very cold) or for disambiguation between a number of words that are spelled the same when context doesn't indicate the correct meaning (één appel = one apple, een appel = an apple; vóórkomen = to occur, voorkómen = to prevent).

English words with diacritics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
English versions of word processors may label correct diacritical spellings as incorrect because the programs' dictionaries are deficient, or perhaps because their makers made a conscious decision to only add variants without diacritics in all cases in which such use does not label their user as ignorant.
If foreign words are used only by a small group of people, their foreign spelling and even pronunciation are often preserved for a long time due to various reasons.
Sometimes diacritics are even added to imported words that originally didn't have any, often to distinguish them from common English words or to assist in proper pronunciation; maté from Spanish mate and animé are examples of these.

List of Arabic loanwords in English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A list of dictionaries consulted has been given; annotations for individual entries for the mere purpose of confirming word equivalences have been deemed unnecessary.
Examples of "influence" are: new words for material objects, technology, intellectual knowledge, ideas, or cultural practices already possessed by European society; the adoption by European societies of new material objects, etc. from the Arabic speaking world.
A person who encounters such words in their reading will reasonably expect a dictionary of the English language to double as a microencyclopedia, "tourism guide", or "gazetteer" for foreign items that remain exclusively foreign.

LINGUIST List 5.178: Pronouns, Rumanian, Diacritics, Greenberg
In many (or most?) languages which use the Latin script, sorting algorithms take acount of diacritics only at the second level of the sort - when the base words without diacritics would otherwise be identical.
However, the question has arisen as to whether in comparing diacritics the sorting algorithm should begin at the end of the word or at the beginning.
However, starting at the end of the word seems counter-intuitive and it is possible that in languages with many compound words (German?) it might result in sorting first by the second word of the compound.

But as a result of Norman French invaders, a large number of Romance words have also come in, derived mostly from Latin (and somewhat from Greek) so that today about 55% of the words stem from that source although the remaining 45% of the mostly Germanic words are the ones most used in everyday speech.
Another good source of foreign words which English speakers have not been able to avoid taking into their language are those which describe customs so strange to them that they simply have no local word yet to call them.

 Hou tu pranownse Inglish
There are many words that are not only pronounced differently in different dialects-- that is, they have a distinct phonetic realization-- but also have their own phonemic representation.
English has more phonemes than the alphabet has available symbols; the usual expedient of the orthography for solving this problem is to use digraphs.
This underlines the relationship between the two words, despite the fact that neither root vowel is pronounced the same.

 Spelling Summary
Proper spelling is the writing of a word or words with all necessary letters and diacritics present in an accepted, conventional order.
Whereas uniformity in the spelling of words is one of the features of a standard language in modern times, and official languages usually prescribe standard spelling, Minority languages and regional languages often lack this trait.
Furthermore, it is a relatively recent development in various major languages in national contexts, linked to the compiling of dictionaries, the founding of national academies, and other institutions of language maintenance, including compulsory mass education.
