The original impetus for the founding of (what was later to become) the European Union was the desire to rebuild Europe after the disastrous events of World War II, and to prevent Europe from ever again falling victim to the scourge of war.
A Committee of the Regions was established as part of the Treaty of Maastricht.

The term European Community (or Communities) was used for the group of members prior to the establishment of the European Union.

The list provided to Afilias, consistent with the GAC recommendation and subsequent to the ICANN Board resolution, contained both English-language country and distinct economy names, as listed on the ISO 3166-1 standard, and their equivalents in the official languages of the countries concerned.
