This is a list of rulers of Finland, that is, the Kings, ruling Dukes and Queen of Sweden with Regents and Viceroys of the Kalmar Union, the Grand Dukes of Finland (identical with the Tsars of Russia), up to the brief Kingdom of Finland at independence in 1918.
Finland's nearly 700-year association with the Kingdom of Sweden did or did not began in approximately 1154 with the introduction of Christianity by a Crusade and an expedition by a svea (Uplandic) nobleman Eric Jedvardson, later known as Saint Eric who became King Eric IX of Sweden.

 Wikipedia: Kalmar Union
The Kalmar Union united the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden under one monarch in 1397.
The countries had given up their sovereignty but not their independence and Swedish dissatisfaction over the Danish centralized government gave rise to the conflict that would lead to its dissolution in 1523.
In 1814 Denmark was forced to cede Norway to Sweden and this would in the middle of the 19th century give rise to the Scandinavian movement which sought to reunite the countries of the Kalmar Union, except Finland, under one monarch.

These records contain the early kings, of the House of Yngling, and give an explanation to the numbering of the monarchs, particularly the names Erik and Karl (Eric and Charles).
However these records are in many cases derived from historical romances and therefore of dubious historical authenticity.
These have often been classified as belonging to the Swedish house of Ynglings, even though the sagas tell that this line of kings was broken (see Ingjald and Ivar Vidfamne), and trace them back to Sigurd Ring and Ragnar Lodbrok.

Natural Elites, Intellectuals, and the State
Under monarchical rule, there was a clear-cut distinction between the ruler (the king) and the ruled, and the ruled knew that they could never become ruler.
How ironic that monarchism was destroyed by the same social forces that kings had first stimulated and enlisted when they began to exclude competing natural authorities from acting as judges: the envy of the common men against their betters, and the desire of the intellectuals for their allegedly deserved place in society.
Accordingly, it appeared logical that kings, too, should be brought down and that the egalitarian policies, which monarchs had initiated, should be carried through to their ultimate conclusion: the monopolistic control of the judiciary by the common man. To the intellectuals, this meant by them, as the people's spokesmen.

Some of the material might therefore be a little dated now; but there is also the virtue that these histories are going to be largely innocent of the brainless Marxism and the kinds of politically correct "race, class, and gender" analyses that have become popular in "post modern" academia.
The only drawbacks are that (1) Thompsett's lists are, indeed, genealogical, which means it is sometimes hard to find unrelated rulers in a succession, and (2) the entries are very summary, without any explanation of may be happening as, for instance, domains are divided among multiple heirs.
However, both Tompsett and WW-Person list Stephen Count of Champagne, Meaux, and Troyes (Tompsett twice, as son of both Herbert the Elder and Herbert, Count of Meaux, identified as "Herbert the Younger").

The initial focus on "near wars" between democracies and "near democracies" that went to war is appropriate for the first wave of case studies of the interdemocratic peace, as it offers tough tests of such a peace.
Democratic peace proponents note that Finnish combat against the democracies was minimal, being limited primarily to having sustained bombing by Britain on one occasion (Russett 1995).
Critics argue that the Finnish case should be considered an important exception to the democratic peace (Spiro 1994).

BBC NEWS | Talking Point | Are monarchies relevant in the 21st Century?
I understand that having a monarch as head of state can be important in upholding the traditions of a country, but what I am unable to comprehend is why the monarch is not obliged to pay taxes like any other citizen.
Either a monarch is intrinsically more able to be a head of state than anyone else by their birth (hardly a very democratic position to hold) or they are not (in which case the population can find someone better by a democratic vote.) It makes no sense either way.
Furthermore, the monarch can heal wounds between countries; where it is unacceptable to send politicians, the monarch are often able to step in smooth relations.
