The Forbes 500 is an annual listing of the top 500 American companies produced by Forbes Magazine.
The list is calculated by combining five factors: sales, profits, assets, market value, and employees.
This method is heavily biased towards distributors such as Walmart, which may have a high volume of sales but may be operating on very thin profit margins.

Forbes magazine, in its 29th annual ranking of the Forbes 500, said Irving-based Exxon, which was No. 3 last year on the Super 100 list, vaulted into its first-place tie with GE by setting a new record for net profits -- $7.5 billion in the most recent fiscal year.
Forbes, in the April 21 edition of the magazine made available Sunday, said computer companies are increasing on the Forbes 500 list.
In a separate ranking, Forbes said New York City is the No. 1 headquarters for Forbes 500 companies, home to 59 firms in 1996, up from 58 in 1995.

More than a dozen Cincinnati-area companies were named to this year's Forbes 500 list of the largest public companies in the nation.
Forbes said it based this year's ''Super 500'' list on the individual rankings of 824 firms that made one or more of their lists, including sales, profits, assets and market value.
Four Greater Cincinnati companies that ranked on previous lists but didn't make the top 500 this year include E.W. Scripps at 537th; Convergys, 573rd; AK Steel Corp., 627th; and Broadwing, 703rd out of the 824 companies eligible for the list.
