French writer-producer-director Louis Malle re-creates a painful memory from his own youth in a restrained, humbling, well-acted dramatization of a boy's firsthand experience of the Holocaust.
Director Roberto Rossellini began filming while German troops were still in the city and the result has a documentary quality giving a sense of immediacy to the period portrayal of events by a cast whose naturalistic acting captures the fervor and determination of diverse social types united in their opposition to fascism.
Directed by Jean Renoir, the picture of life in the camp is rich in narrative incident and human detail, neatly supporting a theme dealing with the end of the aristocratic ideal of chivalry and its replacement by mass armies of commoners with no desire for war.

French language and literature materials may be found throughout the library stacks.
An alphabetical list of French films on video and DVD (both with and without captions) is most easily created by searching the Five College online library catalog under the subject heading: Motion pictures, French and then limiting your search under "WHERE Item is Located" to Mount Holyoke.
There are many websites devoted to French language, literature, culture, politics, etc. The University of Adelaide has compiled an excellent selection of sites ranging from live radio and tv to electronic texts and links to search engines in French.

The film was released in France, Belgium, and French-speaking western Switzerland in April 2001, with subsequent screenings at various film festivals followed by releases around the world.
However, Watson's French was not strong, and when she became unavailable to shoot the film, owing to a conflict with the filming of Gosford Park, Jeunet rewrote the screenplay for a French actress.
The film was a critical and commercial success, but it was attacked by critics such as Serge Kaganski of les Inrockuptibles for its depiction of a largely unrealistic and picturesque vision of contemporary French society, a postcard universe of a bygone France with few people from ethnic minorities — some kind of latent lepénisme.

The 15th Annual VCU French Film Festival will continue its tradition of showcasing a diverse sampling of France’s newest feature films by established, award-winning directors complemented by a screening of courts métrages, or short films, by France’s next generation of groundbreaking filmmakers.
Films are screened at Richmond’s historic Byrd Theatre in Carytown, in Richmond, Va. An official reception with the French celebrities is held each year, followed by an elegant gala dinner in which festival attendees also may meet and speak with the French delegation.
The French Film Festival is sponsored by VCU’ Office of International Education, Division of External Relations, the College of Humanities and Sciences, VCU Filmmaking, and the School of World Studies.
