  Peerage Of France
Early in the 13th century Normandy was absorbed by the French crown, and later in the 13th century two more of the lay peerages were absorbed by the crown, so that in 1297 three new peerages were created (Artois, Anjou and Bretagne) to compensate for the three peerages that had disappeared.
The French peerage was abolished during the French Revolution on the night of August 4, 1789, the Night of the Abolition of Feudalism.
The French peerage was recreated in 1814 at the Restoration of monarchy, albeit on a different basis than before 1789.

The Dispatch - Serving the Lexington, NC - News
In that respect the French peerage was very different from the British peerage (to whom the term Barons, their lowest class, was applied in its generic sense), because the vast majority of French nobles of ranks from Baron to Duke were not Peers.
Peerage was attached to a specific episcopal see (in the case of the episcopal peerages) or a fief.
Members of the peerage had the right to sit in a "lit de justice" (a formal preceding) and speak before the Parlement of Paris, and they were also given high positions in the court, and a few minor privileges such as entering the courtyards of royal castles in their carriages.

 French Peerage
This territorial requirement was formalized for peerages by an edict of March 1582, which required a minimum income of 24,000 livres from the estates that were to form the basis for the peerage.
One exception occurred with the peerage of Aiguillon, which an arrêt of 1604 maintained as a fief of the county of Agénois (held at the time by the king's sister) which was its status prior to becoming a peerage.
It might be a life peerage for one person (Rethel in 1405) or several specified individuals (Nevers in 1347), transmissible by males (Poitou in 1314) or both males and females: that is, the peerage passed to the closest female heir in absence of a male heir.

Peerages which were not registered were usually considered as duchies which became extinct at the death of the beneficiary; hence they were treated like brevet titles.

Britain: The "loans for peerages" scandal and the terminal decline of New Labour
Stockbroker Barry Townsley and Sir David Garrard, a property developer, subsequently requested their names be removed from the peers’ list, amidst complaints that the status and prestige of the titles they were promised has been undermined by Blair’s readiness to grant so many of them.
The cash for peerages row came just days after the financial scandal involving Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell and her husband David Mills, a multimillionaire who specialises in aiding corporate tax avoidance.
Moreover, political responsibility for the “cash for peerages” scandal is shared by many of the prime minister’s latter-day critics, for it is rooted in the transformation of Labour into a political vehicle of the financial oligarchy, a process in which Brown and his allies all played a central role.

Attributions of Authorship in the Gentleman's Magazine, 1731-1868: An Electronic Union List
Since each of my GM databases begins with a complete chronological listing of the attributions contained therein (followed by an alphabetical synopsis by contributor as a cross reference), the first task was to convert an alphabetical arrangement of all of the attributions in Kuist's volume into a strictly chronological listing.
Each item in the Chronological Listing contains the volume number, year, and page number followed by the item in question, the author's name (listed in bold type for ease of viewing), the source of or authority for the attribution, and the original signature appended to the item (if there is one).
Separate listing of contributors should not, however, preclude the possibility that the contributions in question are by one and the same person.

At the heart of the allegations that the Labour government in Britain granted peerages in return for cash is a bigger scandal—how the public sector is being plundered by the government and big business through privatisation and deregulation.
In March it was revealed that several businessmen nominated for peerages in the House of Lords had loaned the Labour Party large sums of money in the run-up to the 2005 general election—thereby bypassing the requirement that political donations of £5,000 ($9,200) or more be officially declared.
