EMD DD35 - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The EMD DD35 was a 5,000 hp (3,700 kW) diesel locomotive of D-D wheel arrangement built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division for the Union Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Railroad.
The DD35 was a cabless booster (B unit) locomotive that basically consisted of two GP35 locomotives on a common frame, riding on a pair of long 4-axle Flexicoil trucks.
EMD produced a demonstrator set like this in September 1963, painted in striking red and white (similar to the Frisco's livery).

 EMD F59PH Information
EMD E-unit freight train in 1950.]] The story of diesel's conquest of steam is better placed elsewhere, but a combination of many factors weakened steam's position and strengthened that of the diesel locomotive, and by the late 1940s to early 1950s, the majority of American railroads had decided to dieselize.
Diesel trains or locomotives that use this are called diesel-mechanical and began to appear (although limited in power) even before the first world war which saw a number of simplex diesel systems built for the war, a small number of which survive and are still operational today.
Union Pacific operated the largest fleet of turbine locomotives and used them extensively, at one point claiming that the turbines hauled 10% of the railroad's freight.

EMD #512, also painted silver, was given the designation ATSF #1C and pressed into service for the first regular run of the Super Chief-2 on May 18, 1937 to replace an ailing Unit #1.
Later, it was rebuilt again, becoming a local freight locomotive running on EMD Blomberg B freight trucks, renumbered as #2611.

List of GM-EMD locomotives - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The following is a list of locomotives produced by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division (GM-EMD).
The vast majority were EMD engines and components inside a carbody built by another manufacturer, since EMD did not have the ability to build their own bodies until 1936.
Cowl units, originally produced at the request of the Santa Fe, had a full-width 'cowl' body built on a hood unit frame which provided all the structural strength; the bodywork was cosmetic, rather than a load-bearing bridge truss frame as in cab units.

GM was a powerhouse in diesel construction and held 90% of the market in some years.
The EMD equivalent to the PA, the E unit, required 2 engines to develop the same horsepower.
On September of 1946, in an elaborate ceremony at the Alco plant at Schenectady, New York, a shiny new diesel passenger locomotive was revealed to the world.

Another couple of notes of interest: This is one of very few early N scale locomotives with the couplers mounted on the frame instead of the trucks (standard Rapido couplers, of course!).
Speaking of the prototype, the SW1200 was made for many years (1954-1966) and there were over a thousand built, making it one of EMD's most popular switchers.
The headlight bulb is actually mounted at the rear of the frame in a plastic socket that fits between the two rear truck retainer plates and plastic pieces in the shell transmit the light to the front of the engine to the headlight.

The EMD NW3 was a 1,000 hp (750 kW) road switcher diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois between November 1939 and March 1942.
The remaining three locomotives were sold to other railroads: #179 was sold to A.E. Staley Co. of Morrisville, Pennsylvania, keeping the same number; #180 was sold to the Clinchfield Railroad as their #361; #181 went to Anaconda Aluminium as their #100.
The locomotive fundamentally consists of an NW2 hood, prime mover (a V12 EMD 567 diesel engine) and main generator on a long frame with road trucks (Blomberg Bs).

At some point after the introduction of the new EMD E1 locomotives for the City of Los Angeles, the train was reassigned to the City of Portland to replace the M-10001.
It entered service as the City of Los Angeles on May 15, 1936, the day after the Santa Fe introduced their first diesel-hauled, heavyweight Super Chief on the same Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California route.
It had two power cars, the lead, cab-equipped one fitted with a 1,200 hp V16 Winton 201-A diesel engine and the second equipped with a 900 hp V12 Winton 201-A that had been removed from the M-10001 when it was rebuilt.

GM's factories must run at a higher level of production than the market demands in order to just break even on their fixed costs (which their unionized workforce is).
Many GM vehicles suffer this malady and others like it such as: one touch windows that only open with one touch but need to be held to close the window, body molding that doesn't stay attached and significant amounts of road, engine and wind noise.
GM could make the greatest cars in the world but if the dealership experieince sucks, it'll be a cold day in hell before anybody will go back to get ripped off again.

In 1959, however, GE's patience with Alco was running thin; they appeared unable to compete with EMD, and in that year GE announced that it was going to enter the road locomotive field itself.
Most of these were sales of its freight F-Unit platform - the EMD F3 and later EMD F7 - but their passenger E-Unit locomotives just as quickly replaced their steam counterparts with shiny new EMD E7 and later EMD E8 locomotives.
That the victory of the diesel locomotive over the steam locomotive was, outwardly, such an easy and rapid one is thanks to the marketing and sales skill of EMD, backed by its aggressive and confident corporate parent.

 Alco versus EMD
ALCo’s transformation from a steam locomotive builder to a producer of diesel locomotives failed because its management, constrained by an outmoded corporate culture, did not perceive that their company would require a radical and comprehensive transformation if it were to survive in the diesel locomotive industry.
Their faith in the steam locomotive was not caused by any inefficiencies in diesel locomotive technology, but, most likely, by their lifelong education and training in the design and production of steam locomotives.
