		This increase in stroke was the maximum the engine could tolerate, to the point that the bottoms of the cylinder barrels had to be notched to clear the big end of the connecting rods, while the bottom piston rings at the lowest point of the piston travel actually passed over these notches.
		Engines supplied with the automatic transmission were equipped with a camshaft identical to that in the lower end (95 horsepower) two carburetor engine, while those supplied with manual transmissions got the camshaft out of the higher end (110 horsepower) two carburetor engine.
		Early engines were subject to frequent failures of the head gasket, between the heads and the cylinder barrels; this was addressed in later models by increasing the width of the sealing area.

		Holden in Australia also used straight-6 engines for a number of years in their family sedan models, with local engines ranging in size from 2.15L (132ci) in the original Holden 48-215 of 1948, to the 3.3L (202ci) six used in the 1970's and 80's, up until 1985 with the VK Commodore model.

		GM's new "Net Build" method of manufacturing and/or assembly, in contrast, assumes all pistons will fit equally well in all cylinders and does not allow for variations in the size of engine cylinders or pistons.
		Essentially, the piston moves sideways and “slaps” or “knocks” hard against the cylinder bore and causes damage to the engine pistons and cylinders, excessive smoke emissions, excessive oil consumption, carbon buildup on piston heads, decreased mileage, and a loud and obnoxious “slapping” or “knocking” noise, all of which diminishes vehicle resale value in the trade.

		The new engines, part of GM's efforts to maintain its edge in truck fuel-efficiency over rival Ford Motor Co., resurrect "displacement-on-demand" technology, which automatically shuts off half of the V8's cylinders, temporarily turning it into a more efficient four-cylinder, when the trucks are cruising at a constant speed or carrying a light load.
		GM officials have been annoyed by Ford's efforts to portray itself as an environmental leader, and have taken more steps to point out their own contributions to raising fuel efficiency and cutting vehicle emissions and pollution.

		To some people, it may bring back terrible memories of the Cadillac V8-6-4 engine on 1980, but modern cylinder deactivation (haven’t driven a car with that myself) is supposed to be reliable so far, and pretty seamless thanks to modern technology.
