Originally, the Victoria Cross could not be awarded posthumously, and could not be awarded to Indian or African troops (although it could be awarded to their European officers).
Between 1858 and 1881, the Victoria Cross could be awarded for actions taken "under circumstances of extreme danger" not in the face of the enemy.
Until the 1920s, the rules relating to the Victoria Cross allowed for the expulsion of a VC recipient from the list of people receiving the honour, and the forfeiture of their pension, if they committed "discreditable acts".

Among the recipients are 18 of Inouye's Japanese-American comrades from the 100th Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
Hajiro, who single-handedly destroyed two German machine gun nests in that battle, was the first 442nd RCT member nominated for a Medal of Honor, but it took more than a half-century and special congressional legislation to get the prestigious award.
His Distinguished Service Cross was one of 52 awarded to the 100th Battalion and the 442nd as the unit achieved the distinction of being the most decorated for its size and length of service in American military history.

The Victoria Cross was born in the carnage of the Crimean War, even though hostilities had ceased a good twelve months before the first award was made.
The final list of recipients was not published in the London Gazette until 22 June, and Hancock's had to work around the clock to engrave the names of the recipients on the Crosses.
Queen Victoria caused some consternation by electing to stay on horseback through the ceremony of awarding the sixty-two recipients with the Cross.

This collection came from the estate of a German family and most of the signed photos appear to be postwar signed from about 30 years ago.

Several large tablets and a memorial list the names of the unknowns memorialized at the cemetary, without headstones.
The graves and tall plaques that list the missing in action and buried dead are silent reminders to the brutal Japanese occupation, that used its prisoners as slave labor, or shamelessly killed them in atrocious crimes or even used them for bayoneted practice.
Many of the plaques on the ground read simply the quote: "Known Unto God" as many remains were buried in mass graves by the Japanese and impossible to identify.

The author lists many names of schools he or members of his family attended., usually by a shortened form of name.
I would only condense them if it is possible to list the individual letters (if discussed) as subheads, since readers familiar with the letters may want to refer specifically to one or the other.
Not to open a whole can of worms on whether to put page refs at the main head, but this is a case where it might be appropriate.
