Although the Germans spent much of their effort in 1915 in a futile campaign for quick victory against the Russians, it was they who first came close to a breakthrough on the Western Front.
This message was sent in January from the German Foreign Secretary, Arthur Zimmermann, to the German ambassador to Mexico, proposing that in the event of war with the United States, Germany and Mexico conclude an alliance, with the adherence of Japan.
With some 20,000 Germans killed or wounded in one blow, the British took the ridge; but when they launched their main offensive a few miles to the north, breakthrough was as elusive as ever.

Contrary to overly imaginative re-enactor fantasy, these were not for traction, a cool marching sound, mutilating the floor paint in kubels, or crushing the knuckles of enemy troops in hand to hand combat.
This style heel iron was peculiar to the German Army.

A list of all German Army Group, numbered Army, and named Army commanders for the war followed by birth-death dates and the dates of a general's tenure of command.
Many generals had several commands, thus if one comes across an officer whose name simply has the dates of the command, that officer likely held a previous army command and appears somewhere else on the list.
Keep in mind his initial command may have been on another front or at a lower level.
