 TREATY BATTLESHIPS
German naval rearmament after World War I was constrained by the Treaty of Versailles, which initially limited German battleships to 10,000 tons and 11 inch main battery guns.
German capital ship designers were enamored of three propeller shaft (rather than the more conventional four shaft) design, and the Scharnhorsts were so equipped (as were the Deutschland and Bismarck classes, as well as the proposed 'P' class battlecruisers and 'H' class battleships).
All of the treaty battleships were heavily compromised to a greater or lessor extent by the need to at least nominally conform to the limitations of the various international naval arms limitation treaties.

21st CENTURY BATTLESHIPS (BBG-21s)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Battleships are designed to survive 15" and 16" shells, which are literally 1000 to 2000 pound penetrating warheads, and many better ships also have excellent torpedo belts.
Battleships are the only vessels that could actually survive the kinds of threats that are likely to appear in littoral areas once they get within gun range of their targets.
With no battleships available the USN was forced to shift their emphasis to the aircraft carrier as the center of a striking force, though they still continued to build a new generation of battleships.

Aerial dominance over battleships: a reality check.
In the case of the Japanese battleships, coordinated torpedo attack was almost impossible until bombs neutralized the massed AA firepower.
The aircraft proved for certain their power over battleships sitting stationary, but I think the ability of aircraft to destroy battleships which are underway AND ready for war is quite overstated.
Besides, WWII proved just how rugged battleships are, and in the big picture of actual events, aircraft were not nearly as dominant over battleships as so many have professed.

criterionforum.org :: View topic - Forthcoming Criterion List (No Speculation!)
To be added to this list, titles must be confirmed as showing in new prints (or on TV in new transfers) or otherwise be indicated as likely forthcoming releases.
I think this list is great, but it's becoming a bit of a chronicle of all titles Criterion might have released in the past, as opposed to a decent list of possible titles; there's a slight difference between the two.
As for the list being unwieldy, there is evidence for each of these titles (however slender or third-hand), so this is more than mere random speculation (though in some cases not much more), and I think we should try to keep this list as comprehensive as possible.

German WW2 Bombers: Junkers Ju 87 Stuka
The Junkers Ju 87 or Stuka was the most famous Sturzkampfflugzeug (German dive bomber) in World War II, instantly recognisable by its inverted gull-wings and fixed undercarriage.
The Stuka's design included some innovative features, including an automatic pull-up system to ensure that the plane recovered from its attack dive even if the pilot fled out from the high acceleration, and wind-powered sirens on the wheel covers that wailed during dives to scare its victims.
The Germans learned in the Battle of Britain that air superiority must be obtained before ground attack aircraft could be effectively used.
