Canada is a constitutional monarchy and a Commonwealth Realm with Queen Elizabeth II as its reigning monarch and head of state.
The Commissioners of Canada's northern territories of Nunavut, Yukon and the Northwest Territories are appointed by the federal Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs and are not formal representatives of the Crown.
Today, virtually all of the Queen's Canadian duties are performed by her representatives in Canada, the Governor General and the Lieutenant Governors of the provinces, though occasionally the Queen's authority is appealed to by Canada's partisan political leaders.

The Governor General summons, prorogues, and dissolves Parliament.

Moreover, Governors General are appointed to the Queen's Privy Council for Canada upon retirement (unless they are already members), and are entitled to the style "The Right Honourable" for life.

The Governor General's official residence is Rideau Hall; by tradition, he or she also spends several weeks a year at the Citadelle in Quebec City.
The present Governor General, Adrienne Clarkson, will reach five years in office on October 7, 2004, but it is not yet known if her term in office will be extended or if a new Governor Genral will be appointed.

Murray commanded a battalion in the 1758 siege of Louisbourg and served under General James Wolfe at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759.
As governor he was sympathetic to the French-Canadians favouring them over English merchants who came to settle in the wake of the conquest and allowed the continuance of French civil law.
Murray was lieutenant-governor and then governor of Minorca from 1774 to 1782 leading an unsuccessful defence of the colony against attack by French and Spaniard forces.

Sir Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester (3 September, 1724 – 10 November, 1808) was a British soldier who twice served as of the Province of Quebec, from 1768–1778 (concurrently serving as Governor General of Canada), and from 1785–1795.
Colonel Carleton was a part of James Wolfe's attack on Quebec City during the Battle of the Plains of Abraham.
General Carleton repelled the American attack on Quebec in 1775, and commanded British naval forces at the Battle of Valcour Island in 1776, eliminating the American ships.
