Alaska attorney and historian Averil Lerman has conducted extensive research on the history of the death penalty in Alaska.
After prolonged debate, the Alaska Territorial Legislature abolished capital punishment in 1957 in a briefly worded measure stating, "The death penalty is and shall hereafter be abolished as punishment in Alaska for the commission of any crime" (Lerman 1994).

But the keepers of Alaska's colonial status should be reminded that the 18th century colonials for long years sought merely to obtain relief from abuses, for which they--like us--vainly pleaded, before finally resolving that only independence would secure for them the "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness," which they felt was their natural right.

The nation's governors come to Seattle this weekend for their annual policy meeting, but there will be plenty of politics and play mixed in.
The governors of at least 35 states are expected to attend the National Governors Association (NGA) event at the Westin Hotel.
LaPaille, the National Governors Association spokeswoman, said a main focus of the meeting will be to help the states "make America elder-ready." As part of that effort, Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne, chairman of the association for the past year, will release a list of 20 recommended actions for improving long-term care.

Frank Murkowski, a giant in state politics since he was first elected to the United States Senate in 1980 but whose one term as governor was defined by constant controversy, finished third in the Republican primary on Aug. 22.
Governor Murkowski, who won just 19 percent of the vote, was defeated by Sarah Palin, the former mayor of the small but growing town of Wasilla, about 45 miles northeast of Anchorage.
Palin would be the first female governor since Alaska became a state in 1959.

When Governor Owens joined in to support compromise reform, he got immediately ostracized by the national conservativement movement, despite the fact that his version of reform failed to go far enough to actually solve Colorado's fiscal crisis.
Governor Robert Ehrlich may be best known nationally for vetoing Maryland's recent Fair Share Health Care bill, but his shameful record did not begin there and is unlikely to end there.
He may well not be one of the three worst governors in the nation, but many Hoosiers would probably tell you that he certainly deserves honorable mention - a recent poll in the state showed him with a 37% approval rating - down in W territory.
