The first reported sighting of Tasmania by a European was on November 24, 1642 by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman who named the island Anthoonij van Diemenslandt, after his sponsor, the Governor of the Dutch East Indies.
There is, in Tasmania, a varied musical scene, ranging from the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra whose home is the Federation Concert Hall, to a substantial number of small bands, orchestras, string quintets, saxophone ensembles and individual artists who perform at a variety of venues around the state.

Arthur Phillip, a captain in the Navy, was selected to be the first Governor of New South Wales, the limits of which were stated by his commission to extend from Cape York to the southern extremity of the country, and westward as far as the 135th degree of longitude.
Inasmuch as a Governor had no force to back up his administration except such as was commanded by these officers, and as they commonly worked against him, it was very difficult for him to maintain respect for his office, much less rightful authority and obedience.

University of Tasmania Associate Professor Richard Herr says Mr Butler's comments were even more controversial because they were made during a traditionally patriotic speech.
"Vice regal representatives, whether they are governors-general or governors have some difficulty in walking that tightrope and most don't try of course, and in this case some who heard the speech thought it had crossed over from the social conscience side to the political commentary side," he said.
