History of the British Virgin Islands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1672, the English arrived in the region, and annexed the Islands, removing the Dutch populations from Tortola in 1672, and from Anegada and Virgin Gorda in 1680.
Separate colony status was gained for the Islands in 1960 and the Islands became autonomous in 1967.
The building of Island Sloops also plays an important role in the history of BVI fishing as they were the means by which local fishermen fished in deeper waters, especially on the fault that lies north of the island of Jost Van Dyke and west of Anegada.

 British Empire
The British Empire, which in the early decades of the 20th century covered nearly 30 million square kilometress with a population of 400-500 million people (roughly a quarter of the world's population), was the most extensive area under a single country's rule in history.
The British Empire first took shape from the early 17th century, with the English settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, which would later become the original United States as well as Canada's Maritime provinces, and the colonisation of the smaller islands of the Caribbean such as Jamaica and Barbados.
British withdrawal from the southern and eastern parts of Africa was complicated by the region's white settler populations: Kenya had already provided an example in the Mau Mau Uprising of violent conflict exacerbated by white landownership and reluctance to concede majority rule.

 British Empire
The British Empire in the early decades of the 20th century, held sway over a population of 400–500 million people (roughly a quarter of the world's population), and covered nearly 30 million square kilometres, (roughly two-fifths of the world's land area).
The overseas British Empire—in the sense of British oceanic exploration and settlement outside of Europe and the British and Irish Isles—was rooted in the pioneering maritime policies of King Henry VII, who reigned 1485–1509.
During the long period of unbroken Whig dominance of domestic political life (1714–62), the empire became less important and less well-regarded, until an ill-fated attempt (largely involving taxes, monopolies, and zoning) to reverse the resulting "salutary neglect" (or "benign neglect") provoked the American War of Independence (1775–83), depriving Britain of her most populous colonies.

In many of these cases, the evidence of innocence was so overwhelming that the state effectively acknowledged error in some manner -- by, for instance, seeking the defendant's release, prosecuting and convicting someone else for the crime, or paying civil compensation to the freed inmate.
It was this astounding rate of error that led the governors of Illinois and Maryland to call for moratoriums on capital punishment in their states.
Since convincing proof of innocence often does not emerge until many years after conviction, Rakoff reasoned, imposing the death penalty deprives innocent people of the opportunity to prove their innocence in violation of procedural due process and creates "an undue risk of executing innocent people," in violation of substantive due process.
