Mayor Lee Brown and former Mayor Bob Lanier used Wednesday's opening ceremonies for the expanded George R. Brown Convention Center and the new Hilton Americas-Houston Hotel next door to make their sales pitch for the city.
Lanier, who preceded Brown as mayor and chairs a nonprofit corporation through which the city owns the hotel, said Houston is a place where "everybody should have a chance."
But he also noted that two of their predecessors, mayors Jim McConn and Kathy Whitmire, had pushed for the initial phase of the convention center, which opened in 1987.
