Illinois is known for its large and diverse population; its balance of rural areas, small industrial cities, vast suburbs and a great metropolis; its highly diverse economic base; and its central location that has made it a transportation hub for 150 years.
Illinois was a major arsenal in both world wars; large numbers of fls left the cotton fields of the South to come to Chicago, where they developed a famous jazz culture.
The western section (west of the Illinois River) was originally part of the Military Tract of 1812 and forms the distinctive western bulge of state.

Watersheds of Illinois is a list of basins or catchment areas into which the State of Illinois can be divided based on the place to which water flows.
At the simplest level, in pre-settlement times, Illinois had two watersheds: the Mississippi River and Lake Michigan, with almost the entire State draining to the Mississippi, except for a small area within a few miles of the Lake.
This list can be used in conjunction with the alphabetical List of Illinois rivers.

Previous studies of Illinois' large watersheds show increases in average annual flow for the years 1941-1985, with corresponding increases in peak flows and a doubling of the days in peak flow, all of which correspond to higher rainfall in the watersheds.
Analysis of data from 28 permanent fish census stations on the Illinois River for the years 1963 and 1992 reveal what appears to be a general trend toward recovery in terms of certain measures of stream ecosystems.
Of the larger animal species present in Illinois streams at the turn of the century, about one in five of the fish, one in three of amphibians and reptiles, more than half the freshwater mussels, and one in five of the crayfish have been extirpated or are threatened by extinction.

 Colorado River tops 2004 list of endangered rivers
The river wanders 1,500 miles from the peaks of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, snaking across Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California before flowing into the Gulf of Baja in Mexico, although in most years it is little more than a trickle when it reaches its delta.
The Big Sunflower River in Mississippi, which was the most endangered river last year because of an Army Corps of Engineers pumping and dredging project that the group said would destroy wetlands and stir up toxins in the river bed, was No. 2 on the group's list.
American Rivers, a Washington-based nonprofit conservation group, says the rivers on the list are not necessarily the ones with the worst chronic problems, but those they say are most in peril because of toxic chemicals, severe water shortages and other problems.

Section 303 (d) of the federal Clean Water Act requires all states to submit such a list every two years, identifying waters "which will not attain applicable water quality standards with technology-based controls alone," that is, streams with water quality limitations.
The Illinois EPA is currently in the process of hiring a consultant to do the first TMDLs, which must be presented to U.S. EPA within two years of the federal agency's approval of the proposed 303 (d) list.
Once the Illinois EPA completes the revisions to its initial submission list, the information on the Fox River segments will be available to the public on request as inserts to the original proposed list.

Opened in 1907, this shortcut between the Illinois and Upper Mississippi Rivers, was at least fifty years obsolete.
In Illinois it parallels the Illinois and Michigan Canal from Joliet to LaSalle, the Hennepin Canal from Princeton to Moline, and the old route of the Rock Island Railroad from Joliet to Moline.
Appropriate to the bottom of this list is the bottom of Illinois, the lowest elevation point and southern-most point in the state, where the Ohio River enters the Mississippi.
