The Indian government used the excuse of "internal civil disorder" to invade Hyderabad with a full armored division in September 1948 and after inflicting 1,200 casualties on the local forces, the state was forced into union with India.

Hundreds of princely states in British India existed prior to the independence of India and Pakistan (including the present Bangladesh) in 1947, ruled by semi-independent potentates.
Only four of the largest of these states were still directed by the British through Residencies—British advisors actually present in the states' capitals, most states were grouped together into regional agencies or even governed indirectly, such as vassals of states in direct report with the viceroy.
The most important states are ranked among the salute states (see there for the details concerning ranks of precedence).

At the close of the French and Indian War, in 1763, the French having been forced from the Ohio Valley, a Philadelphia trading company was organized to monopolize the Indian trade of that region.
In 1776 this Indian land was transferred to a new company, known as the “Indiana Land Company,” and was then offered for sale; but as the land lay within the existing limits of Virginia, she claimed it as her own by right of her charter.
The Attorney-General of Virginia was subpoenaed by the United States Marshal to appear before the Court on the 4th of August, 1793, to answer to the complaint of the Indiana Company.

For the British in India, the ceremonial (and political) structure within which the princes were placed was determined by the number of ceremonial "guns" each ruler was allowed in his (or, rarely, her) formal salute.

He left the paper later to join the services of the Indian Princely States as Secretary to the Chancellor of the Chamber of Princes.
