Indiana is located well within the Corn Belt, and the state's agricultural methods and principal farm outputs reflect this: a feedlot-style system raising corn, to fatten hogs and cattle.
Indiana was formerly home to two major military installations, Grissom Air Force Base near Peru (reduced to reservist operations in 1994) and Fort Benjamin Harrison near Indianapolis, now largely reduced to reservist operations, though the Department of Defense continues to operate a large financial operation there.
Indiana is home to a sizeable and influential proportion of Mennonite and Amish Christians, particularly in Elkhart and LaGrange Counties in the north, and a smaller number in Parke County in the west.

This section of Fawn was famous in Indiana among canoers and kayakers for the rugged beauty of its course.
It has been called "Indiana's Answer to Canada" and a "wild river in miniature." The upland portions remain mostly forested with, at times, high banks that made you feel as if you were being squeezed through the neck of a bottle when a swift spring current carried your canoe forward.
Fawn River was destroyed on May 18, 1998 when the Indiana Department of Natural Resources discharged 100,000 cubic yards of mud into the section of the stream beginning at Orland, Indiana.

Henry, Ohio across northern Indiana to Illinois where it forms the southern Illinois-Indiana border before draining into the Ohio River, of which it is the largest northern tributary.
The name "Wabash" is an English spelling of the French name for the river, "Ouabache." French traders named the river after the Miami Indian word for the river, "Wabashike," (Prounounced "Wah-bah-she-keh"), the word for "pure white." The Miami name reflected the clarity of the river in Huntington County, Indiana where the river bottom is limestone.
The Wabash is the state river of Indiana and subject of the state song, "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away" by Paul Dresser.
