The E7520 and E7320 chipsets are functionally equivalent, but the E7320 has fewer I/O ports [1].
Because of this, the same chipset can be used for Socket 8, Socket 370, Slot 1, or Slot 2 designs with any CPU in the P6 family.
In practice however, newer chipset designs are usually only made for the newer processor packages, and older ones may not be updated to accommodate for recent package designs.

 The Tech Report - Intel's 865PE and 865G chipsets - Page 1
Now Intel is bringing all that bandwidth to the desktop with its new 865PE and 865G chipsets, formerly known as "Springdale." As is our custom, we've lined up the new 865 chipsets against a bazillion of their competitors for a WWE-style benchmark beatdown.
The 865 chipset family is derived from the same basic technology used in Intel's 875P chipset, which we reviewed last month upon its introduction.
Intel cherry picks the best MCH chips and certifies them to run at more aggressive timings internally, cutting memory access latency by a couple of ticks per request.

X-bit labs - Intel Grantsdale, Alderwood Chipsets Official Names Revealed?
Intel Grantsdale-P (Intel i915P) is expected to sport 533 and 800MHz Quad Pumped Bus for LGA775 processors, dual-channel DDR-II memory at up to 533MHz, PCI Express x16 port for graphics cards and a rich arsenal of I/O capabilities.
Intel is also said to ship Grantsdale-G (Intel i915G) adding Intel Extreme Graphics 3 core to the mentioned list of specifications, Grantsdale-GV (Intel i915GV) without PCI Express x16 as well as Grantsdale-GL (Intel i915GL) with no graphics port and DDR-II support, featuring only 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus for future Celeron processors.
Intel’s Alderwood, from now on presumable to be called i925X, will boast the same technologies as i915P (Intel Grantsdale-P), such as DDR-II and PCI Express, but will also add a feature similar to the famous Performance Accelerating Technology available in i875P.

Intel by the end of the 1990s was one of the largest and most successful businesses in the world, though fierce competition within the semiconductor industry has since diminished its position somewhat.
During the 1990s, Intel's Intel Architecture Labs (IAL) was responsible for many of the hardware innovations of the personal computer, including the PCI Bus, the PCI Express (PCIe) bus, the Universal Serial Bus (USB), and the now-dominant architecture for multi-processor servers.

Intel warns vendors not to overclock 865 chipsets
The stern warning sends out a clear challenge from Intel to motherboard makers including Asus, Epox, Abit and others that introducing a BIOS to enable elements of 875 technology in 865 chipsets is meeting strong disapproval from the chip giant.
A representative from Intel in Santa Clara said: "Intel does not condone over-clocking, and users and/or system manufacturers that employ over-clocking may void their Intel chipset warrantees and subsequently, any failures associated to an over-clocked Intel chipset may be the sole responsibility of the user or system manufacturer".
He continued: "With the 875P chipset, the internal signals, including PAT capabilities, are being run as designed, tested and validated by Intel, and this results in a very robust platform across silicon & board skew and all specified temperature ranges".

Server Chipsets > Intel Pentium Pro/II/III Chipsets for Servers   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Intel was the leading vendor of chipsets for its P6 processor families, which included the Pentium Pro, Pentium II, and Pentium III.
Most recent Intel chipsets for single-processor or dual-processor servers are designed as two-part systems, using a North Bridge (MCH or GMCH in hub-based designs) and a South Bridge (ICH in hub-based designs) component.
The Intel 440GX AGP set was the first chipset optimized for high-volume midrange workstations and lower-cost servers, and it was Intel's first chipset for the server/workstation version of the Pentium II, the Pentium II Xeon.

OU MAY BE aware that Intel is introducing a new PC expansion spec called PCI Express, designed to replace the not-so-gracefully-aging PCI bus and its prodigal son, AGP.
What I meant to say was that Intel clearly intends to clean up the last vestiges of the circa-1990s PC platform at once, weeding out weaknesses and pulling open bottlenecks.
At the heart of Intel's PC overhaul is that too-often overlooked component, the core logic chipset.

The issue is the memory controller, since Intel platforms put the memory controller on the northbridge, then the quality of the memory controller plays a key role in the performance of the chipset paired with the CPU.

You may be reading that the 975 is the "Premium" line of Intel but Performance wise the top drawer over clockers are the 680i and the 965's, the next step down is the 975's and the 650is, the 650i is relatively new but has a few overclock benchmarks surpassing some of the 590's.

NVIDIA's forray into the Intel chipset market began near the middle of last year with the release of the nForce4 SLI Intel Edition chipset.

There were very few changes made to the logic on this chipset; one is that it now officially supports the Pentium D 820 processor, where as before the nForce4 SLI chipset did not -- it was a mistake on NVIDIA's part from the beginning.

In the past, Intel has stated that the PCI Express transition will be very fast, and their chipset strategy seems to be supporting that goal.

This strategy of forcing users who want to upgrade to the latest chipsets to move to PCI Express is something Intel has tried in the past, not with graphics but with memory technologies.
