The Interstate shield is not to be confused with the similar-shaped green shield for a business route or loop, which gives access to and from the business district without meeting the specifications for Interstate highways.
Interstate 238 near Oakland, California is the lone exception to the numbering scheme, as no Interstate 38 exists (this number exists because Interstate 238 replaced a segment of California Highway 238 and changing the number would have split the California Highway in two segments.

Now bringing an interstate or two through our area is not the silver bullet answer to every road-related ill we face today in our part of Georgia.
But the fact is, interstates bring to rural America what little else can offer – connectivity with the rest of our region and nation, relatively cheap and safe travel for anyone with a vehicle, and the ability to capitalize on economic development opportunities that have been missed for too long.
It’s appropriately named after the 14th Amendment (which was ratified as part of the U.S. Constitution to guarantee equal rights to all people, including former slaves) because it’s the folks living along the Southern Black Belt that have faced a particularly dire lack of transportation infrastructure development throughout the years and suffered the consequences.

Interstate 80 is a major, national, east-west route.
Interstate 280 opened in 1956 as part of the Toledo-Detroit Expressway, which also included what is now I-75 from the I-280 terminus to US 24 in Flat Rock, Michigan; and a segment south of the Ohio Turnpike, ending at US 20/23.

So the end of the interstate in one state and beginning in the next are always significantly different milemark numbers.
