His comments, at a time of major problems within Northern Ireland, with the Provisional IRA and Irish National Liberation Army campaigns in full swing, were widely criticised in the Irish media as insensitive, especially as Irish unity had not even been on the agenda of the summit.
In September 1990 The Irish Times carried a series of articles on the presidency, one of whom mentioned in passing the role of Lenihan, Sylvester Barret and Charles Haughey in making the controversial phonecalls to Áras an Uachtaráin, the Irish presidential residence, to pressurise the President.
In the aftermath of Lenihan's TV denial, The Irish Times, which was aware that Lenihan himself was Duffy's source for the original article claim, with Duffy's agreement published a newspaper story confirming that contrary to Lenihan's TV claim, he had made the controversial phone calls to the Áras in an attempt to pressurise President Hillery.

The prime ministers of Britain and Ireland began negotiations Monday to try to prevent a breakdown of the Northern Ireland peace process, drawing the province's political leaders into private talks at a secluded country house.
Chances of agreement appeared slim, however, as the Irish Republican Army has given no indication it is prepared to disarm--the principal issue that has brought the peace process to a point of crisis.
The two prime ministers met with the political leaders at a 17th Century country house set in 1,000 acres of parkland in the British Midlands.

An interesting list, and I can understand your reasoning for most of them, while disagreeing strongly with anyone who could doubt, for example, that Roy Jenkins was the worst Home Secretary.
Also, Denis Healey ceased being Minister of Defence in 1970, and the Minister in the Labour Government was Fred Mulley (the man who was famously pictured fast asleep at one military display while sitting next to the Queen).
It's (in the strict technical sense) begging the question to cite the power-sharing executive as a Good Thing, for it is my contention that it had no hope of success, owing to its design: it masked a fundamental change in the British Government's attitude to the constitutional status of Northern Ireland.

Irish, Palestinian foreign ministers discuss Baghdad abduction of aid chief
DUBLIN, Ireland - Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern received Palestinian support Thursday for efforts to win the release of Margaret Hassan, an Irish-born charity director being held hostage in Iraq.
After meeting in Dublin, Ahern and Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath issued a joint appeal for the release of Hassan, who since 1981 has directed the Iraq aid work of CARE International.
While many politicians think Irish citizens should enjoy a better chance of surviving abductions in Iraq than their British or American counterparts, a few politicians say all they're doing is highlighting Ireland's lack of practical neutrality on the matter.

Amnesty International today called on the Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen, representing the EU Presidency, to demand concrete answers on human rights protection in the Chechen Republic from Russian foreign minister Igor Ivanov during Thursday's talks in Dublin.
Amnesty International recalls that the European Commission recently proposed that in all talks with Russia, "recent political developments, which demonstrate discriminatory application of the law, or the non-respect of human rights, should be raised vigorously and coherently by the EU and its Member States."
Amnesty International repeats the same three questions for the Irish foreign minister to put to his Russian counterpart, in the hope that this time the EU will attain some concrete results from its "new" relationship with Russia:
