	Early Child Ballads
		Our understanding of the ballad has changed somewhat since Kittredge's day (particularly with regards to his identification of the ballad as a literary form first, and only secondarily as song), but his definition is close enough to the modern one to serve as a jumping-off point for a lengthier attempt at characterizing the ballad form.
		Ballads tend to be characterized by impersonality on the part of the singer: The narrator is not personally touched by story, is not taking sides, and typically sings without much dramatization.
		Internal evidence for the age of a ballad is an unreliable guide, partly because of an eighteenth-century tendency to cloak new ballads in an appearance of antiquity.

		Having recently spent several months in Ireland and doing a lot of listening to singers, I place a high value on this particular sound of an unaccompanied singer whose songs are precious gems handed down for generation.
		The background notes for the songs are excellent, with historical and geographical origins as well as discussion of the type of songs (shanty, ballad, etc) and sometimes their musical structure.

		In Irish traditional music, a session is simply a gathering of friends who play and sing in a public house (or pub).
		From the vocal tradition come ballads, laments, and “sean nos” unaccompanied singing, and what have been referred to as “sad songs of love, and happy songs of war and drinking.” Songs may be in English or Irish Gaelic.
