This was brought largely to an end, however, with the invasion of the Vikings in the 10th century and the Normans in the 12th century.
English rule was largely limited to the area around Dublin known as the Pale initially, but this began to expand in the 16th century with the final collapse of the Gaelic social and political superstructure at the end of the 17th century.
As such, the Irish Pound was replaced by the Euro as the official currency on the 1st of January, 2002.

The Irish language was adopted as a symbol of national pride because it was “traditional,” in that it had been spoken longer on the island than English, and because it was a reminder of a past that was, in imagination, anti-materialistic, anti-modern, and in all ways bright and shining.
The Irish identity thus created was one that, once its followers were in power, guided them into promoting their vision of the island as an insula sacra and home of “priests and patriots,” because materialism and cosmopolitanism had already been thrown out of the ideology.
Irish became a peasant language (after the English wiped out Irish nationalism) and ceased to have any prestige--even during the Gaelic Revival, some native speakers were reluctant to use their language because they considered it embarrassing.

Society for the Study of Nineteenth-Century Ireland, Institute of Ulster Scots Studies is pleased to present Across the Water: Ireland and Scotland in the Nineteenth Century at the University of Ulster, Magee on June 16 and 17, 2006.
The Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies (RIISS) recently celebrated its fifth anniversary and to mark this occasion is offering at least five scholarships and bursaries for suitably qualified candidates to pursue interdisciplinary research and graduate training on the history, literatures, languages and cultures of the two countries.

Given the terror's that "European" culture has visited upon the world in the 19th and 20th centuries, it might even be considered helpful to have access to alternate cultural roots.
Among other current cultural taboos, the examination of the effects of a centralized bureaucracy versus a wealthy landed "aristocracy" and of state religion on a society are chiefly unexamined here in the U.S. Such topics would be wise to consider in this hybrid nation.
The time was right for the cultural explosion,though, because of the creation of the strong middle class in Italy, and later in the rest of Europe due to the colonization.

Vonda N. McIntyre periodically posts a list of authors who will snail-mail out their books upon request, including with inscriptions, etc. The list is currently available in one of two ways: anonymous ftp to rtfm.mit.edu in the file /pub/usenet/news.answers/books/basement-full-of-books.
Monthly lists of collectable first editions of 20th century fiction, literature, literary biographies, and photographic monographs are available via email or snail mail.

Amused, Hanif P.S. The purposes of the political-islam list and the one you suggest are not very different -- both would serve to assess the cooptive (as opposed to cooperative) opportunities in regard to political (the first) and policy (the latter) attitudes of Muslims.
I've learned from some of the lists I belong to, about how to delete a message without reading it if the topic is clearly on something which doesn't interest me. This is a very new type of technology, speaking to and listening to 400 people whom we don't even know--and doing it simultaneously.
In addition to posting to the list, feel free to send me any comments/suggestions, etc. REVS grew much faster than we anticipated, and we are working hard to shape it to meet the needs of those with an interest in these important issues.
