  Japanese literature
Japanese literature spans a period of almost two millennia of writing.
Although Japanese literature and Japanese authors are perhaps not as well known in the west compared to European and American canons, Japan owns an old and rich literary tradition that draws upon thousands of years of culture and experience.
Classical Japanese literature refers to literature produced during the Heian Period, a golden era of art and literature.

AFT: Publications: American Educator: Winter 2001: Something There Is That Doesn't Love a List
Lists include and exclude texts based upon criteria that are sometimes unclear even to the list makers.
The mandate that the list should be a "collection of outstanding literature for children and adolescents and reflect the quality and the complexity of the types of material students should be reading both at school and outside of class" left a great deal of room for individual judgment.
Earnest and obviously well-intentioned, the state’s list is nonetheless diffident and so self-evidently tentative in insisting on where quality resides, that it is difficult to deduce the standards applied.

 Stephen Laniel’s Unspecified Bunker
Of course this is partly subjective and seemingly circular: a work’s status as a classic is in part defined by whether people who’ve written other classics derived influence from the work we’re judging.
The social problem in that essay was simply that what is a classic for an American may not be a classic for a Japanese person.
Classic status is often an assumption, or an inherited belief based on what you've been told, not what you believe or 'know'.

Akiyama was born in 1868 and grew up during the period when the Meiji-era government sought to check the power and influence of the samurai, the warrior class in which Akiyama's father had served in a minor capacity.
His report was so thorough that it became "the classic source of information" about the application of naval power and helped shape Japanese naval strategy after 1898.
Akiyama's multi-stage plan, while imperfect, helped the Japanese Navy achieve victory in the naval battle of the age, one that particularly focused upon annihilation of the enemy.

Lin defended himself by pointing out that the bulk of the content (8 of the 20 volumes) was by the Japanese monk Xuzhong, resident in Hangzhou and perhaps the most esteemed player of the early Ming.
