		The American Council for Judaism was founded in 1942 by a group of Jewish Reform rabbis and lay leaders in order to express their opposition to Zionism.
		The Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR), the oldest rabbinic association in the United States, was founded in 1889 by Isaac M. Wise at a biennial meeting of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC).
		Hadassah, the largest Jewish women's organization in the world, was established in 1912 by Henrietta Szold to raise the standard of health in Palestine, to encourage the development of Jewish life in America and to foster the Jewish ideal.

		The show, based on the literature of Sholom Alechem, tells the story of Jewish villagers in czarist Russia, was produced by Harold Prince, and directed by choreographer Jerome Robbins.
		The list included Billie Holiday, whose performance of this song lives on in the annals of great jazz and live-performance history.
		Feminists didn't like it, either, and the artist had to defend the song the rest of her life.

		Germans are extremely interested in Jewish culture: books by Jewish writers and about Jewish issues sell well enough to make the country the third-largest market for Judaica (behind Israel and the United States); sales of klezmer CDs have been huge since the revival of the genre in the late 1980s.
		Schmidt was popular with German- and English-speaking audiences alike; American audiences thrilled to his performances at Carnegie Hall, calling the five-foot-tall Schmidt "The Pocket Caruso." His career was at its zenith when the Nazis began their rise to power, yet his popularity was such that they allowed him to continue performing internationally, despite growing restrictions.
		He shared with many German artists of Jewish origin the same fate, the same passion for music, and the belief in "their country." Nevertheless, most of their music is today beyond recall.

		Seems to me that the obvious antecedent of "Great Jewish Music" is the AACM's motto "Great Black Music: Ancient to the Future" which, judging from the output of AACM members, includes a truly vast amount of human sonic creativity.
		He said that his main object in writing the book was because he had never heard of any sort of history being done of "his people" He thought that stories of the triumphs and trials of past gays would give gays a history and a sense of worth.
		They may have subtle traces of Jewishness, but their music is not evolved from "Jewish" culture in the way that Klezmer, for example, is. Perhaps it's just a matter of semantics, but calling it "Jewish Music" seems to be an innacuuracy.
