Thailand is commonly divided into four regions: the north, the northeast, the central region, and the south.
Thailand's northeast consists mostly of the Khorat Plateau (a plateau is a fairly flat, elevated expanse of land; Khorat is an important city after which the plateau is named.) This region is arid and its soil is not very fertile.
Beneath it are two standing Buddhas, erected by King Rama III in honor of his father Rama II and his grandfather Rama I. So famous have these statues become that Thai now refer to the two kings by the names of the statues built in their memory: Phra Phutthayotfa and Phra Phutthaloetla.
