Somewhere in Tyme - Learning Center Orders of Knights Page
Knights is a title of a honor derived from the old English Cniht, a servant or attendant, which refers to those who attended kings upon horseback.
Knight Banneret is not known to occur in England previous to the reign of Edward I.; and about the commencement of the sixteenth century the title seems to have been almost entirely laid aside: still occasionally, instances occur.
Although there are precedents to justify surrounding the impaled arms of a knight and his lady with the garter, it is not usual, and certainly must be laid aside by the lady should she survive her husband.

Garter Principal King of Arms is the head of the College of Arms (England's heraldic authority) and thus the "principal" herald for all England (along with Wales and Northern Ireland).

The Order of the Garter was founded by King Edward III as "a society, fellowship and college of knights." The year of foundation is usually taken to be 1348, although dates ranging from 1344 to 1351 have been proposed.
The Garter Principal King of Arms is ex officio the senior officer of the College of Arms (the heraldic authority of England), and is usually appointed from among the other officers of arms at the College.
The military knights now wear the old military uniform of an "army officer on the unattached list": fl trousers with red stripe, a red double-breasted swallow-tailed coat, gold epaulets and brushes, a cocked hat with a plume, and a sword on a white sash.

Stall-Plates of the Knights of the Garter
The number of knights was originally 26, and accordingly the stalls were numbered from 1 (Sovereign's stall) to 26, with the odd numbers on the south side and the even numbers on the north side (that is the system used in earlier reference works such as Ashmole and Joseph Pote, 1749).

The medieval descendent of the Roman equites was the feudal knight.
This pre-eminence of cavalry was correlative to the decline of infantry on the battlefield.
The knight's object became one of knocking off their horses as many opponents as possible, and in the process, breaking as many lances as possible; obviously the more lances a knight broke, the greater must have been the force of his charge and the higher his level of horsemanship.

The Most Noble Order of The Garter described in the early 1800s - The Royal Windsor Web Site
The garter being thus buckled on, and the words of its signification pronounced, the knight elect is brought before the Sovereign, who puts a deep blue riband beltwise over his left shoulder, whereunto is appendant, wrought in gold, within the garter, the image of St. George, on horseback, with his drawn sword encountering the dragon.
Garter is now sent to conduct the senior knight elect to the chapter-house door, where he is received by the commissioners; and the same manner the other knights elect are conducted, one by one, according to their seniority.
Garter then presents the statute book, which the commissioners deliver to the knight, and the commissioners then place the cap and feathers on his head, and seat him in his stalls whereupon the officers of the order retire with the usual reverences, and stand before their seats.

The chivalric ideals--the code by which a knight was supposed to live--was hardly a fixed template of ideas; rather, it was a shifting kaliedescope of competing ideas put forward primarily by three main groups--the chuch, the court (and the ladies), and the knights themselves.
The church sought to harness the knight's energy and martial skills--his prowess--primarily by forumulating a role for him in the church's structure of society--the protector.
The court--both the upper nobility (themselves knights) and the ladies--sought to civilize the rough warrior and to imbue him with virtues they held in high esteem; fidelity, largesse, and duty to their liege lord as well as respect for ladies.

Taking our inspiration from the secular orders such as the Garter, Star and Golden Fleece or the Tournament Societies of the 14th and 15th centurues, these companies hope to bring something new to the SCA and to make a postive contribution to both chivalry as an ethic and to the SCA as an organization.
Most of these groups operate within the larger context of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), and yet all strive by their examples to explore different avenues of the tournament as a tool for re-enactment and for the teaching of virtue.
