 UWM Special Collections - LGBT Studies Collection
In order to support LGBT Studies at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Department of Special Collections at Golda Meir Library collects, preserves, and makes accessible published primary source materials that document LGBT life and culture.
There is a particular emphasis on collecting LGBT fiction before the 1970s, and we have a growing collection of queer pulp fiction and romance novels.
The LGBT Studies collection is developed through gift and purchase, and is still in the early stages of formulation.

Provides bibliographic information drawn from a variety of essential women's studies databases and publications of interest to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) community, covering topics such as feminist theory and history, family planning, law, employment, literary criticism, racial/ethnic studies and international feminism.
Covers a wide variety of publications including journals, book and media reviews, the alternative press, fact sheets and guides, newsletters, government reports and data, personal narratives, instructional pamphlets, legislative actions, and proceedings and is full text.
It is also selective about what it chooses to include from publications -- the CWI staff select articles they consider to be "women's issues," and they generally exclude articles on the arts and other humanities.

This archive in Toronto, ON, has a periodical section devoted to LGBT publications dating back to the 1930's and is perhaps the world's largest collection of materials.
The mission of the Queer Zine Archive Project (QZAP) is to establish a "living history" archive of past and present queer zines and to encourage current and emerging zine publishers to continue to create.

Public Policy Advocate for the Human Rights Campaign Fund (HRCF), as well as a member of the executive committee of Stonewall 25 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Bayard Rustin Alliance.
As former director of the New York City Mayor's Office for Lesbian and Gay Issues she was instrumental in negotiating the inclusion of the lesbian and gay contingent in the St. Patrick's Day parade, by having former NYC Mayor Dinkins march with the group.

Web index sites, clearinghouses, directories (all sites that gather or point to resources elsewhere), and e-journals and electronic news (publications, newspapers, and news programs that include actual content, as opposed to just tables of contents or subscription information) are the focus.
Many bibliographies and booklists are included, as are online reference materials, a few periodicals lists, lists of bookstores, video distributors, literary award lists, children's and young adult resource materials, and online exhibits.
Also includes NGLTF publications, many of which are available in PDF format on the website, plus downloadable "issue maps" (which document state by state issues such as hate crime legislation), opinions, and speeches.

Results: LGBT issues were addressed by 3777 articles, or 0.1% of all Medline articles; 61% of the articles were disease-specific, and 85% omitted reference to race/ethnicity.
Research unrelated to sexually transmitted diseases addressed lesbians and gay men with similar frequency, whereas bisexual persons were less frequently considered, and the least amount of research focused on transgender individuals.
Conclusions: Findings supported that LGBT issues have been neglected by public health research and that research unrelated to sexually transmitted diseases is lacking.

The first recommendation is to fund the on-going costs that result from migrating the communications system of our Office of Public Safety to a server-based environment.
The Vice President also asked for funding that would be administered by her office to support the programs and activities of the Frist Campus Center, the Women’s Center, the International Center, the Carl A. Fields Center, the LGBT Student Services program, Outdoor Action, and the Graduate School.
While the rate of increase recommended for this year is higher than the rates recommended over the past several years, it is lower than the average national rate of increase last year in both public and private institutions.

Although we are unique in the US as an international organization working on LGBT issues, we are also one of the lesser-known of the major US-based groups, due to our focus on issues outside the US.
Some organizations we support are focused on constituencies which do not fit the LGBT identity paradigm, such as single women, tongzhi, hijra, sex worker, and sexual rights groups.
If LGBT / HIV-positive tourists wish to help local LGBT / HIV-positive activists, try to contact them ahead of time, as activists are often busy people and cannot be relied upon to be tour guides on call or to take time to meet.

WASHINGTON (September 13, 2004) The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition (GenderPAC) condemned a memorandum issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) announcing that the Department would not recognize any marriage in which either party has changed or plans to change their sex.
The recent revelation that Governor James McGreevey is gay, but has hidden this from his family and the public, raises important issues on how homosexuality is still stigmatized in our society and how this stigma affects all of us.
