The keel of the first LST was laid down on 10 June 1942 at Newport News, Va., and the first standardized LSTs were floated out of their building dock in October.

LSTs are best used in a supporting role to neutralize or destroy your opponent's most threatening units, be it fast moving assault troops or heavy-weapon toting shooters.
The ability to generate 4 x Strength 6 AP 4 shots (with rending possibilities) and 3 x Strength 5 AP 4 shots against a single target is better spent against high payoff targets instead of the rank and file troops units in an opponent's army.
That way you can preserve them for the last turn and use their superior speed and mobility to seize or contest terrain (mission dependent) or set your assaults up for success by cutting off your opponent's fall back corridors resulting in a potential crossfire after close combat is resolved.
