Latvians or Letts (Latvian: latvieši), the indigenous people of Latvia, occasionally refer to themselves by the ancient name of Latvji, which may have originated from the word Latve which is a name of the river that presumably flowed through what is now eastern Latvia.
Latvians and Lithuanians are the only surviving members of the Baltic peoples and Baltic languages of the Indo-European family.
Latvians look like and are considered Nordics, evidenced through the strong historical, cultural and religious influences gained over centuries during Germanic and Scandinavian colonization and settlement.

Pro-independence Latvian Popular Front candidates gained a two-thirds majority in the Supreme Council in the March 18, 1990 democratic elections.
Seventy-three percent of all Latvian residents confirmed their strong support for independence March 3 in a nonbinding "advisory" referendum.

Known originally as Livonia, the area that now constitutes Latvia was under the influence of the German Sword Brethren (Schwertbrüder) from the 13th century onward until the 16th century, when the institution of Livonia was terminated and sold by the local aristocracy to Poland.
There are also Jews (9883 in 2005) in Latvia who are now mainly a remainder from the Soviet Union, as during World War II the Jewish Community (according to the last official census in 1935 there were 93,479 Jews in the country, or approximately 5% of the total population) was annihilated.
The current ethnic mix of the population of Latvia is largely the result of massive immigration during the years of the Soviet occupation, which resulted in a decline of the share of ethnic Latvians from 77% (1,467,035) in 1935 to 52% (1,387,757) in 1989.

The first list in this book was compiled in 1942 from an inquiry conducted from relatives and friends of those deported [although it is questionable how many Jews were left in Latvia at that point to report their relatives missing].
This list, published by a Latvian emigre organization, contains 30,000 names of those who were deported, murdered or reported missing due to Soviet activity during the entire period of the Soviet occupation during World War II (1940-41).
The list of synagogues includes the name of the head of thesynagogue, the address, year it was built, and number of members.

Martin Haspelmath mentioned a German TV report of some sort "showing that knowledge of the Latvian language is sometimes required of Russian-speaking Estonians even where it makes no sense".
Personally, I would hope that Latvians would take any measures they deem necessary to get everybody in their country to speak their language.
I'm sure all of those who have been shown that kind of disrespect in their own country by people who think they're above learning the national language would applaud any such measures.
