A civil case, more commonly known as a lawsuit begins when a plaintiff files a document called a complaint with a court, informing the court of the wrong that the plaintiff has allegedly suffered because of the defendant, and requesting a remedy.
A criminal case begins when a person suspected of a crime is indicted or charged with the offense by a government official called a prosecutor or district attorney.
The procedure for legalizing a foreign document varies from country to country: the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement for Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents has supplanted this procedure with the use of the apostille in countries that are signatories to that convention.
