Liberty ship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On 27 March 1941, the number of lend-lease ships was increased to 200 by the Defense Aid Supplemental Appropriations Act, and increased again in April to 306, of which 117 would be Liberty ships.
Another notable Liberty ship was SS Stephen Hopkins, which sank a German commerce raider in a ship-to-ship gun battle in 1942 and became the first American ship to sink a German surface combatant.
The ships were built in great haste, often by inexperienced people, in the era before embrittlement effects on steel were well understood; they were frequently grossly overloaded; and some of the problems occurred during or after severe storms at sea that would have placed any ship at risk.

 Definition of Liberty ships
The Liberty ships were cargo ships built as part of a WWII era program to increase the number of U.S. flag vessels.
Liberty ships were slow, but economical to build; more than 2,700 of them were built by major shipyards and by emergency shipyards that had been set up to fill the need for cargo shipping.
Late in the war, the building of Liberty ships was replaced by that of Victory ships and other more substantial types of cargo ships.

 Project Liberty Ship
The first ships constructed were dependent upon the parent company for the fabrication of their steel, thus the yard was originally equipped with only a small fabricating shop of its own.
The building time of the ships was very much more rapid that the contracts stipulated, the mild climate of the area allowing the pre-assembly of large sections in the open, and for each day saved the shipyard received the usual bonus payment.
Also in the same year a prime factor in the reduced Liberty ship output was the award to the yard of a contract for sixty C2-type cargo ships, for which it began laying keels in mid-1943.

Liberty Ships, Master List of Names
Ships that survived the war were either (i) tied up in various holding areasaround the U.S. coast (these ships were generally scrapped in the early 1960s); (ii) sold commercially around 1947-49 (these ships invariably changed owners and names several times; few of them survived after 1975).
Subsequent name changes (with the exception of ships delivered to the navy or offered for lend-lease, most name changes took place after the war) are not recorded in the master list.
These ships were converted to hospital ships, troop carriers or (in one instance) a training ship.

Using several illustrations of Liberty's position, at time of attack, her position appears about 15 statute miles further west and slightly north of her 1200 local time position.
This appears consistent with the assumption that Sixth Fleet ships traveled east, toward the fleet-midpoint, from their 1200 local time positions, until the time of intercepting USS Liberty's distress call (about 1410 local time) and given the order to proceed to Liberty's position.
