Peerage - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
The only remaining peerage with associated lands controlled by the holder is the Duchy of Cornwall, which is associated with the Dukedom of Cornwall, a dukedom held by the eldest son and heir to the Sovereign.
Life peers created under the Appellate Jurisdiction Act are known as "lords of Appeal in Ordinary." They perform the judicial functions of the House of Lords and serve on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
While life peerages were often created in the early days of the Peerage, their regular creation was not provided for under an Act of Parliament until 1876, with the passage of the Appellate Jurisdiction Act.

The Sovereign him- or herself cannot belong to the Peerage as "the fountain and source of all dignities cannot hold a dignity from himself" (opinion of the House of Lords in the Buckhurst Peerage Case).
Life peers created under both acts are of baronial rank, though there is nothing to prevent the creation of a life peer by the Sovereign of some other rank.

Nowadays, Life peerages, always of baronial rank, are created under the Life Peerages Act 1958 and carry with them, presuming the recipient meets qualifications such as age and citizenship, seats in the House of Lords.
Life Peers were to be chosen from senior judges, civil servants, senior officers of the British Army or Royal Navy, members of the House of Commons who had served for at least ten years, scientists, writers, artists, Peers of Scotland and Peers of Ireland.
A peer created under the Life Peerages Act has the right to sit in the House of Lords, provided he is twenty-one years of age, is not suffering punishment upon conviction for treason and is a citizen of the United Kingdom, of the Republic of Ireland or of a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

 French Peerage
This territorial requirement was formalized for peerages by an edict of March 1582, which required a minimum income of 24,000 livres from the estates that were to form the basis for the peerage.
One exception occurred with the peerage of Aiguillon, which an arrêt of 1604 maintained as a fief of the county of Agénois (held at the time by the king's sister) which was its status prior to becoming a peerage.
It might be a life peerage for one person (Rethel in 1405) or several specified individuals (Nevers in 1347), transmissible by males (Poitou in 1314) or both males and females: that is, the peerage passed to the closest female heir in absence of a male heir.

Constitutional Matters - The Merit of Life Peers
Baroness Jay, the new Leader of the House of Lords, wanted life peers "to be stripped of their aristocratic titles".
The Countess of Mar, holder of what is now the most ancient peerage title, Lord Whitelaw, holder of what was the youngest hereditary peerage title, one created for him, and Lord Cranborne, who was summoned in his father's barony, represent three aspects of the hereditary peerage.
The ability of an eldest son to be summoned to sit in the House of Lords in right of his father's barony is ancient, dating at least from Thomas Fitz Alan, eldest son of William, Earl of Arundel, summoned as Lord Arundel de Mautravers in 1482.

A total of 28 names were put forward by all the main party leaders for peerages last year, but their honours were blocked by the Lords appointments commission, which objected to some of the nominations.
None of those on the list has done anything wrong, but lenders were not required to disclose their names, and the tactic has been attacked as a means of circumventing the rules which Labour brought in to avoid allegations of sleaze.

Attributions of Authorship in the Gentleman's Magazine, 1731-1868: An Electronic Union List
Since each of my GM databases begins with a complete chronological listing of the attributions contained therein (followed by an alphabetical synopsis by contributor as a cross reference), the first task was to convert an alphabetical arrangement of all of the attributions in Kuist's volume into a strictly chronological listing.
Each item in the Chronological Listing contains the volume number, year, and page number followed by the item in question, the author's name (listed in bold type for ease of viewing), the source of or authority for the attribution, and the original signature appended to the item (if there is one).
Separate listing of contributors should not, however, preclude the possibility that the contributions in question are by one and the same person.

Despite failing to find replacements for four businessmen whose nominations were reportedly blocked in the row over "cash for peerages", the prime minister still narrowly managed to preserve Labour's position as the largest party in the House of Lords.
Their nominations, rev-ealed in a list leaked last year, were reportedly blocked because they were among a dozen wealthy businessmen who loaned the Labour party £14m to finance last year's general election campaign.
Lord Oakeshott, a Liberal Democrat peer, said the removal of the most contentious nominations from the list was a "triumph for the independent appointments commission and a humiliation for Tony Blair".
