 E-029 2003 And Beyond
Microsoft has released benchmark showing Windows 2003 to be 69% to 89% faster than Linux for file and print services, but this "independent study" is highly suspect, comparing a highly tuned Windows system against an old version of Linux with known performance problems and an old version of Samba (T13).
Currently over 60% of Microsoft's business customers are still running Windows 95/98, and would have to purchase all new computers for an XP upgrade - new computers soon to be obsoleted by Longhorn and Palladium.
Microsoft sees the danger very clearly, and is already spending millions of dollars to fight open source, but their most effective weapons are ineffective against such low cost products that are available from many sources, none of which are dependent on Microsoft for their success.
