		Baseball's appeal to spectators and its introduction to small towns and rural areas particularly in the south during the Civil War engaged the game in what would become two of the important cultural themes of the American twentieth century: the commodification of leisure time and the formation of national identity.
		Baseball had not wandered into town with Rickey's Cardinals in 1943 as program articles claimed even in to the early 1980s; it had a local tradition extending back to nineteenth-century teams that even fielded a few local boys on their way to careers in the major leagues.
		Major league baseball was in the middle of the longest players' strike in professional sports history, and the Pittsburgh Pirates, playing in a small major league market, faced greater troubles than most.

	Major League Mascots
		Mascots have to deal with taunting and provocations, verbal and even physical abuse from rowdy and drunken fans – to the extent that many of them now have escorts that are essentially bodyguards.
		Several mascots have spent time on the disabled list for injuries incurred during games; Seattle's Mariner Moose crashed into an outfield wall while on roller blades and broke his ankle and Slider fell six feet off of an outfield wall, and tore a ligament in his knee.
		Of the fans that loathe mascots, one of their most common complaints is that the mascot’s antics cause a distraction and make it difficult to watch a game - of course if your team is losing then a diversion by the mascot may be preferable than watching the game anyway.

		Lou Seal is a seal, for both the seals that hang out on the SF piers and the old minor league baseball team, a nice play to the past.
		He supposedly was named the mascot because dinosaur bones were found during the building of Coors Field, but I somehow doubt that (wouldn’t they stop building to excavate?).
		As for 'Morning Glories', that term has a baseball connotation since it was used to describe hot shot spring training rookies who shone in the morning (On the rookie diamonds) but failed miserably in the afternoons against the big boys.

		The mascots' attention was something we probably could have done without-let's just say that Rally wasn't being too faithful to his new bride or all that respectful of my friends' personal space.
