Maryland, with an area of 32,135 sq km (12,407 sq mi), is the 42d largest state of the U.S.; 3.1% of the land area is owned by the federal government.
Maryland was a slaveholding state, and during the controversy that led to the American Civil War large segments of the population favored secession from the Union.

The 1859 siege of Harper's Ferry along the river's right bank was precursor to numerous epic battles of the American Civil War in and around the Potomac and tributaries.

One of the largest, undisturbed river stretches left in the United States, the 51-mile Hanford Reach upstream from Richland, Washington, topped the group's list of 20 rivers considered threatened by pollution, residential and commercial development and overuse.
Factory farms were considered a threat to the Pocomoke in Maryland, the Apple River in Wisconsin and Illinois, and the Potomac in West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania.
American Rivers says dams threaten six rivers on its list, including the lower Snake River in Washington state, where dams have blocked salmon and steelhead runs, despite government efforts to truck and barge young fish around the dams.

American Rivers, a national organization that examines issues of water quality, water scarcity, and sprawl, today [April 19] listed the Shenandoah River as the fifth most endangered river in the nation, primarily because of uncontrolled development.
“One of America’s most storied rivers, the peaceful Shenandoah is facing an onslaught of overdevelopment that threatens the tranquility and clean water that have attracted people to the river for centuries,” American Rivers said.
More than 1,300 miles of the Shenandoah River are on EPA’s “dirty waters list” for violating water quality standards, and the river and its tributaries have experienced annual fish kills for the past several years.
