Harvard University Harvard has a friendly rivalry with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which dates back to 1900, when a merger of the two schools was frequently mooted and at one point officially agreed upon (ultimately canceled by Massachusetts courts). The House system was instituted by Harvard president Abbott Lawrence Lowell in the 1930s, although the number of Houses, their demographics, and the methods by which students are assigned to particular Houses have all changed drastically since the founding of the system. World Rankings The top three universities in the world, according to the report, are Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cambridge. To determine rankings, the Times surveyed 2,375 academics worldwide on their selections of top universities and programs and combined the results with such factors as the number of times published research papers were cited by colleagues, staff-to-student ratios and the number of students and faculty recruited from overseas.
