Medieval music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The beginning of the Ars nova is one of the few clean chronological divisions in medieval music, since it corresponds to the publication of the Roman de Fauvel, a huge compilation of poetry and music, in 1310 and 1314.
In fairness to the mostly anonymous composers of this repertoire, however, most of the surviving manuscripts seem to have been copied with extreme incompetence, and are filled with errors that make a truly thorough evaluation of the music's quality impossible.
With this marker, the English composers of this transitional period (1400-1450) are correctly viewed as medieval.

For information about specific composers writing secular music in middle Medieval era, see Berenguier_de_Palou, Arnaut_Daniel (one of the finest poets of the age, in addition to being a composer), Giraut_de_Bornelh, Marcabru, Peire_Cardenal, Raymond Lull, Bernart_de_Ventadorn, Bertran_de_Born (Dante), Jaufre_Rudel, Alfonso_X_of_Castile, Wolfram_von_Eschenbach, Walther_von_der_Vogelweide, and Niedhart_von_Reuenthal.
The term "''Ars nova''" art, or new technique was coined by Philippe de Vitry in his treatise of that name (probably written in 1322), in order to distinguish the practice from the music of the immediately preceding age.

Medieval music - Education - Information - Educational Resources - Encyclopedia - Music
Medieval music is music of Europe in the Middle Ages.
This era, using the interchangeable terms "medieval" and "middle ages", covers the period from the fall of the Roman Empire (476) and the papacy of Gregory the Great (sixth century) to approximately the beginning of the fifteenth century, though establishing the end of the Medieval era and the beginning of the Renaissance is admittedly arbitrary.
Chant (or plainsong) is a monophonic secular form which represents the earliest known music of the Christian church; that which we call Gregorian chant is the stylistically consistent, doctrinally unified version which came together from several different chant traditions (Roman, Mozarabic, Gallican, Ambrosian, and others) under the supervision of Rome in approximately the ninth century.

 Courtly love and Machaut
Imagination, too, reigned supreme, transmitted by the medieval mind into gargoyles, unicorns, and the poetry that was considered a natural form of expression.
Albert Seay (“Music in the Medieval World”, New Jersey: Prentice-Hall, 1965, page 144), writes: “Machaut’s life reflects the secularization of the century, for, although a cleric, his career was spent in secular circles; his connexions to the Church were at best tenuous, although his main source of income was as beneficiary of various religious posts.
The medieval age was a time of vivid and colourful styles: brightly dyed clothing, highly spiced foods, ornate architecture.

Pérotin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
French composer, the most celebrated musician involved in the revision and re-notation of the Magnus liber (attributed to Léonin).
He may have been born circa 1155-60, revised the Magnus liber 1180-90 subsequently composed his three- and four-voice works and died in the first years of the 13th century; or he wrote the four-voice works early in his career, revised the Magnus liber in the first decade of the 13th century and died circa 1225.
The creation of three- and four-voice organum circa 1200 is an important step in the development of polyphony which until then had been conceived in terrns of two voices, and Pérotin's compositions show great awareness of the implications for structure and tonality.
