Melbourne is the only city in Australia where motor vehicles are required to perform a hook turn, a manoeuvre designed to give trams priority.
Soon a Melbourne cable tramway system was running from the city to nearby suburbs, but as the city grew the technical limits of the cable tram system became apparent, and electric trams were developed for lines to more distant suburbs.
Melbourne resisted the trend, partly because Melbourne's wide streets and geometric street pattern makes trams more practicable than in many other cities, partly because of resistance from the unions, and partly because the Chairman of the MMTB, Sir Robert Risson, successfully argued that the cost of ripping up the concrete-embedded tram tracks would be prohibitive.

Metlink - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since being introduced in 2003, railway stations, tram and bus stops around the city have started to receive new Metlink-branded signage, which replaces the inconsistent signage of the various (some now defunct) transport operators.
Many communters would argue that consistent signage and information is of a lower importance than other problems facing Melbournes's public transport networks; such as safety (including poorly-lit railway stations and the lack of a consistent staff presence), increased service frequency, and expansion of the rail and bus networks to serve the newer, car-choked outer suburbs.
During the re-privatization of Melbourne's Public Transport system in April, 2004, the Metlink brand was applied to a new company whose role is to cover several minor functions previously performed by the State Government and the Franchise operators.

It is a universal ticket which allows commuters to ride on the city's trains, trams, and buses.

Ticket inspectors randomly check trains and trams, but their sometimes heavy-handed tactics have resulted in public discontent and even court cases, with at least four successful assault convictions and numerous disciplinary sackings.
