With the majority of state legislatures done for the year, an overview of the activity from the state capitals shows it was a busy year for state psychological associations.
Several states have reciprocity agreements with other states on licensure, or they are among the 10 states that have signed on to an ASPPB agreement of reciprocity.
Meanwhile, Utah's state legislature created the classification of "Certified Psychology Resident." The law requires all postdoctoral individuals going into supervised practice prior to licensure to submit an application to the Department of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL), be of good character, obtain continuing education, and meet with the psychology licensing board if requested.

SB 2390 directs the State Board of Education to develop a list of conflict resolution and peer mediation materials and models that address responsible decision-making, the causes and effects of school violence and harassment, cultural diversity and nonviolent methods for resolving conflict, including peer mediation.
A major initiative between the states of Mississippi and Louisiana on the issue of hunting and fishing licenses was agreed upon in the session’s final week, ending a "license fee" war that had lasted for almost a year.
In turn, Mississippi agreed to lower its all-game hunting license for Louisiana residents from $425 to $300 and its archery/primitive weapon license for Louisiana residents from $100 to $75.

States will begin 2007 on firm financial ground, but none are banking on $1 billion surpluses that some states unexpectedly enjoyed in 2006.
Many states are upbeat about their revenue outlook for the remainder of this fiscal year, which ends June 30 for all but four states But looming health care, homeland security and other costs have tempered states’ positive outlook compared to a year ago, according to a Dec. 7 report by NCSL.
States also used their unexpected revenue in 2006 to boost funding for education, health care and capital projects.

Thirteen years ago, Pelican Bay State Prison was cut out of a dense forest near Crescent City, Calif. The highlight of the Supermax prison was the Security Housing Unit (SHU), where 1,300 of the state's most hardened criminals are kept in near isolation.
The ADX (administrative maximum) Supermax Prison in Florence, Colo., is a state-of-the-art isolation prison for repeat and high-profile felony offenders.
The warden at the time puts the prison in what he calls "permanent lockdown." It is the first prison in the country to adopt 23-hour-a-day cell isolation and no communal yard time for all inmates.
