Despite its sizable American Indian population, Montana is one of the most homogenous states— nearly nine-tenths of are of European descent, with a large number of immigrants of German, Irish, Norwegian, Welsh/Cornish, Italian and Slovak heritage arriving from the late 19th to early 20th centuries.
The state capital is Helena (nicknamed "Queen City of the Rockies"), hometown of the late Gary Cooper and Myrna Loy, and sister city of Kumamoto, Japan.
As of 2004, the population of Montana was estimated to be 926,865.

George W. Bush won the state's 9 electoral votes in 2004 by a margin of 5 percentage points with 51.7% of the vote, considerably less than the 9% margin Bush won by in 2000, however this can be largely attributed to the 5% of the vote Ralph Nader won in 2000.

For example, in Washington state, all of the strikes must fall under specific violent crimes that are defined by the law.
For example, Montana requires mandatory life in prison without parole for two violent offenses, such as deliberate homicide or aggravated kidnapping, as defined in their criminal code.

When a treaty is in effect between the United States and a foreign country providing for the transfer of a convicted offender who is a citizen or national of the foreign country to that country, the Governor is authorized, subject to the terms of the treaty, to consent to the transfer of the convicted offender.
This policy is applicable to all employees of the Department of Corrections, private prisons, and all inmates assigned to an institution operated by the Department of Corrections or a private prison established by KRS 197.505.
The practice of prisoner transfers should contribute to the easing of overcrowded conditions in the State prisons and will allow the transferred prisoners to be under the control of the country of their citizenship.

Deer Lodge, MT Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Old Montana Prison was built by inmate labor, this turn-of-the-century fortress was home to at least one member of Butch Cassidy's "Wild Bunch".
It was used to house prisoners during the American Revolution, and in 1790 became the state prison.

 Deer Lodge, Montana : Information and Pictures
Today, Deer Lodge is home to the main prison in MT. Additionally, Deer Lodge is also home to the Old Montana State Prison, which has been turned into a museum and is probably the town’s biggest tourist attraction.
Montana Snowbowl, down in Missoula, is also located relatively close (about a 90 minute drive).
And, for the person who has some time on their hands, a trip through the Old Montana State Prison is also a highly recommended activity.
