  Mystery Science Theater 3000
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988–1999), usually abbreviated MST3K, is a cult television comedy series created by Joel Hodgson featuring a man and his robot sidekicks who are trapped on a satellite in space and forced to watch particularly bad movies.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 first aired on local TV in the Twin Cities on KTMA-TV, a UHF station (not a cable access channel, as is sometimes reported) from November 24, 1988 to May 1989.

Episodes 101- The Crawling Eye to episode 113- The Black Scorpion had the standard "Joel" lyrics we are familiar with, plus visuals that were almost as cheesy as those on KTMA
In episode 819- Invasion of the Neptune Men Mike is so repelled by the movie that he leaves the theater, only to be forced to return when he discovers that Pearl has turned off the oxygen supply to the rest of the ship (a trick that Dr. Forrester similarly used in MST3K: The Movie).
It was actually (as many suspected all along) the last episode done in season one, and was made after episode 113- The Black Scorpion, which explains why there are references in that episode to several later episodes, and the announcement of the winners of a contest that is first announced in episode 110- Robot Holocaust.

In case you're new to the world of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" (MST3K for short, that what us fans - "Misties" - call it), this is the famous TV show where a silhouette of a man and two robots sitting in theater seats provide running commentary for some of the worst movies ever made.
Three of the episodes come from the excellent sixth season, when Mike Nelson was the human host and the wisecracks and comments had become razor sharp and fast and furious.
All episodes end with "Keep circulating the tapes" -- this was to encourage word-of-mouth by trading tapes of the show recorded off the air among fans and those unfamiliar with the show.

As far as I know, MST3k only managed rights for the films featured in their episodes under very limited terms; in most cases they need to re-negotiate the rights to make DVDs; and in more than a few cases they managed to, well, slightly annoy the creators (and rightsholders) with their antics.

Mystery Science Theatre 3000 is, unashamedly, one of my favorite TV shows of all time.
There are a couple of episodes and one movie available on DVD, and we'll be looking at them over the next few days.
The reason for this, I think, is twofold: Fear that a movie audience would be laughing too loudly and miss jokes, and that non-MSTies would be overwhelmed by the usual style: Throw a dozen jokes against the wall and see what sticks.
