List of NC-17 rated films - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of films rated NC-17 by the Motion Picture Association of America's Classification and Rating Administration (CARA).
Films receiving an NC-17 are often cut and resubmitted in hopes of earning an R rating, which allows distribution to more outlets than an NC-17 rating.

MPAA film rating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Films that have been rated PG-13 in their theatrical run are sometimes extended with footage equivalent to an R (but not NC-17) rating and marketed as "unrated" with the implication that the added unrated material is racier than an R rating would permit.
Early James Bond films released in the 1960s and 1970s that could possibly be re-rated to a PG-13, were recently re-processed under the old "rating symbol changed" clause rather than be officially re-reviewed in a manner that may cause their traditional M, GP, and PG ratings to be revised upward.

MPAA gives film about itself an NC-17 rating
If they didn't give a NC-17 rating, the story could be spun that the exact scense that gave other films that rating didn't give this film the same rating.
Thus, they can show a very sanitized movie that we would expect to be lower rated and claim that the MPAA unfairly gave them a NC-17 rating.
the film has clips from NC-17 movies in it, so the MPAA pretty much has to rate it NC-17.

Problem is that Jarmusch probably is hip and quirky, and he would seem even more so if his films didn't too often feel like he was trying too hard to be sure you noticed.
This neatly dovetails with Jarmusch's film, which explores the idea of Don Johnston wandering through the wreckage of his past to find out which of four old girlfriends might be the mother of his son.

 Film Genres
Musical/dance films are cinematic forms that emphasize full-scale scores or song and dance routines in a significant way (usually with a musical or dance performance integrated as part of the film narrative), or they are films that are centered on combinations of music, dance, song or choreography.
Horror films are designed to frighten and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience.
Action films usually include high energy, big-budget physical stunts and chases, possibly with rescues, battles, fights, escapes, destructive crises (floods, explosions, natural disasters, fires, etc.), non-stop motion, spectacular rhythm and pacing, and adventurous, often two-dimensional 'good-guy' heroes (or recently, heroines) battling 'bad guys' - all designed for pure audience escapism.

 L.I.E. - Rate it 'A'
As a consequence, 'NC-17'-rated films are confronted by de facto censorship from cinemas that will not book them, video chains that will not stock them, media outlets that will not advertise them and consumers who reactively reject them as unsuitable either for their teenaged children or for themselves.
The new rating would identify films of an adult nature that are not pornographic or ultra-violent but which may not be suitable for children under 17.
When the Motion Picture Association of America brands a film with their 'NC-17' rating (formerly known as 'X') that film is universally, and most often unfairly, regarded as pornographic, sexually explicit and/or ultra-violent in nature.

The independent groups list references to sex, violence, and drugs in movies, and come up with their ratings.
