Among one of the conflicts, and indeed, the one conflict that formed the NHL, was one of Edward J. Livingstone, owner of the Blueshirts.
In 1926, the NHL was left without competing leagues to vie for the Stanley Cup, due to its higher player salaries that other leagues were unable to match.
Because of this and the effects of World War II, the NHL was reduced to six teams in its 25th year (1942), the six teams that are now known, somewhat inaccurately, as the Original Six.

One of the league's follies is that the average one-job coaching tenure is less than the life of a set of tires, without rotation (because who ever remembers to do that?).
The problem with bringing in a "proven" coach is that the very fact that he is available often underscores the short-term realities of the business, and involves a realization that somebody else tuned him out -- because that's just what you do after a certain amount of time in hockey.
Recycling, especially in a league that treats its coaches as disposable commodities and tosses them in a bin to place at the curb for other general managers to pick through, is neither demonstrably unwise nor a guaranteed failure.
