Blogger News Network / Killilng Off Our Mentally Ill in Our Prisons
Last August, a prison inmate in Jackson, Mich. — someone the authorities described as “floridly psychotic” — died in his segregation cell, naked, shackled to a concrete slab, lying in his own urine, scheduled for a mental health transfer that never happened.
Last month in Florida, the head of the state’s social services department resigned abruptly after having been fined $80,000 and is facing criminal contempt charges for failing to transfer severely mentally ill jail inmates to state hospitals.
Simply put, when the data on state and county mental hospitalization rates are combined with the data on prison rates for 1928 through 2000, the imprisonment revolution of the late 20th century barely reaches the level we experienced at mid-century.

Mental health services criticized - The Boston Globe
Massachusetts Mental Health Commissioner Elizabeth Childs acknowledged the criticisms, saying, ''It's clear we have work to do." But she said the state is moving in the right direction for the 24,000 extremely low-income people who rely on the state for mental healthcare.
The cost of such poor performance, the report found, is a rising number of people with mental illness in jails and prisons or showing up in emergency rooms when their illnesses reach the crisis point.
New England generally fared better than the national average -- Maine got a ''B-," Rhode Island a ''C," and Vermont a ''C-." The alliance called Connecticut a national model for its commitment to making the mentally ill better.

New Hampshire does not have the tax structure sufficient to finance the many programs its citizens want.

CONCORD- The debate over staffing at state prisons, an issue fueled in part by the slaying in August of defrocked priest John J. Geoghan, an inmate at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, resurfaced yesterday during a rally outside Concord State Prison.
Aiming to create a collective voice on the issue, about 200 correction officers from Massachusetts and 11 other states carried the message that their safety, and that of inmates and the public, is at risk because of low staffing levels.
The rally yesterday was organized by the Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union, which represents about 3,500 workers at 18 state prisons.
