Under this new union, the continued status of the individual states as sovereign nation states fell into dispute in 1861, as several states attempted to secede from the union; in response, then-President Abraham Lincoln claimed that such secession was illegal, and the result was the American Civil War.
In most states, students are generally obliged to attend mandatory schooling starting with kindergarten, which is normally entered into at age 5, and following through 12th grade, which is normally completed at age 18 (although in some states, students are permitted to drop out upon the age of 16 with the permission of their parents/guardians).

Brien Caroline Wolf Harlow, Ph.D. BJS Statisticians At yearend 1993, 21,538 of the 880,101 inmates held in U.S. prisons--2.4% of Federal and State prison inmates--were known to be infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS.
In 1991, 17,551 Federal and State prisoners were known to be HIV infected, and in 1993, 21,538--an increase of 3,987 inmates.
States reporting the highest percentage of prisoners infected with HIV were New York (12.4%), Connecticut (6.6%), Massachusetts (3.9%), Maryland (3.8%), and New Jersey (3.7%).

In New Jersey state government, too much time is spent by departments and by legislators on developing annual budgets and#173; a cycle that begins in state agencies in earnest in October and does not end until July and#173; and not enough time on improving and overseeing program efficiency.
Clearly, property taxes are too high, and New Jersey's gasoline tax is too low, but gas taxes will undoubtedly have to be increased in FY2003 to provide funding for transportation capital projects, not to reduce property taxes.

STATE POLICE CAPTURE ONE OF New York, N.Y. - Brian Winston Wilson, one of the earliest postings on New Jersey's Twelve Most Wanted list, was apprehended by authorities at his apartment in New York early this morning.
During the week of October 14th, a New York State Parole Officer contacted the New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit saying that they believed Wilson was on parole with their department under the name Paul McKnight and living in an apartment on Amsterdam Avenue.
The N.Y./N.J. Regional Fugitive Taskforce is a joint initiative of the U.S. Attorney's Office, the U.S. Marshal's Office, N.J. Office of the Attorney General, the New Jersey State Police and local law enforcement in all 21 counties of the state.
