The subway is operated by the New York City Transit Authority, described by its parent Metropolitan Transportation Authority as MTA New York City Transit.
The city was closely involved; every line built for the IRT, and most other lines built or improved for the BRT after 1913, were built by the city and leased to the companies (via the original Contracts 1 and 2 for the IRT subway, and the Dual Contracts for later extensions and widenings).
Cars purchased by the City of New York since the inception of the IND and for the other divisions beginning in 1948 are identified by the letter "R" followed by a number; e.g.: R32.

Subway cars (R44s) operate on the Staten Island Railway, opened in 1860, but that is not usually considered part of the Subway.
The first line of the city-owned and operated Independent Subway System (IND) opened in 1932; this system was intended to compete with the private systems and allow some of the elevated railways to be torn down.
The New York City Transit Authority was created in 1953 to take over subway (and bus/streetcar) operations from the city, and was placed under control of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 1968.

The majority of the lines of the present-day New York Subway were built or reconstructed under these contracts.
Contract 4 was signed between the City and the Municipal Railway Company, a subsidiary of the BRT (later BMT), formed especially for the purpose of contracting with the City for construction of the lines.
The City's contribution was in cash raised by bonded indebtedness, while the companies' contributions were variously by supplying cash, facilities and equipment to run the lines.

The box with the line and dot in it near the switch represents the tower; the dot represents the tower operator, and the line the interlocking machine or panel.
The dotted line around switch 7 is a track-circuit jumper, connecting the two pieces of track around the insulated section of the switch into the same track circuit.
Control lines are sometimes marked with track numbers, station numbers, or lever numbers, depending upon the pedigree and intent of the diagram; any is sufficient to disambiguate the control lines.
