The metropolitan area with the smallest population to have at least one team in each of the four major sports is the Denver area, the 22nd largest in population, with 2,196,028 people as of 2000.
New York is also the only city to host at least one team in each sport throughout the entire period MLB, the NHL, the NFL and the NBA have coexisted (1946 to the present).
New Jersey is the most populous state without representatives in all four major leagues operating within its territory, although North Carolina is the most populous state having none of its territory within a metropolitan area hosting teams in all four major leagues (it has three major league teams).

The International Archery Federation (FITA), USA Archery, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, and the New York City Sports Commission (NYCSC), today announced that the final rounds of the 42nd World Archery Championships will be held in Central Park’s North Meadow on July 19 and 20.
This will mark the first time the Archery World Championships will be held in New York City and the first world championship of an Olympic sport held in the city since it won the right to be the U.S. bid city for the 2012 Olympic Games last November.
New York previously hosted the Archery World Team Trials in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens in 2001.

Its basketball team has that name, and so also do its hockey, football, baseball, soccer, volleyball, and all the other sports teams.
Still, this is the rare exception, and usually when you specify city (or team) only, and the other person(s) in your conversation would have no trouble recalling which team (or city).
